Questions violists ask before they choose

What's the difference between beginner, intermediate and advanced violas?

Beginner violas are built for first lessons and school programs, and come as outfits with a bow and case. Intermediate violas are the step up, with finer, hand-carved tonewoods and a deeper, more colorful voice for youth orchestra and solo repertoire. Advanced violas are for auditions, ensemble and solo work, where a rich C string and projection matter most. Each product page says exactly what is included.

What size viola do I need?

Violas are sized by body length in inches rather than fractions, with smaller sizes for younger players, and fit depends on arm length and hand size. Our sizing guide walks you through it. If the player is between sizes, call us before ordering and we'll help you choose.

How is a viola shipped, and what if it arrives damaged?

Your viola is packed by our workshop with particular care for the bridge and setup, and the shipment is fully insured. Standard shipping is free within the United States on orders over $99, and in-stock violas typically ship within 3 business days, after setup.

Unpack and check the viola the day it arrives, and keep the box and all packing. If anything was damaged in shipping, contact us right away, the same day if you can, with photos of the viola, the box and the packing. Please don't tune it up or try to fix anything yourself; we take it from there, including the insurance claim.

If you find a defect, or we sent the wrong item, let us know as soon as you notice, and always within your return window. When the issue is our responsibility, we repair, replace or exchange the viola and cover shipping both ways.

Can I return a viola?

Yes. Most violas can be returned within 45 days of delivery. Violas priced above $3,000 and antique instruments have a 7-day return window. Every product page shows the window that applies. Full terms, condition requirements and shipping deductions are in our Returns policy.

Can I pay over time?

Yes. Shop Pay Installments lets you split eligible purchases into monthly payments at checkout, subject to approval.

What happens when a violist outgrows it or is ready to step up?

Our trade-up program can apply up to 100% of your original Atelier purchase price toward a higher-level instrument in the same family, after an in-person evaluation. Moving up a fractional size carries a $65 exchange fee.
