Viola case buying guide

How to choose a viola case

Start with size. Violas vary in body length, so measure yours in inches before you choose. Fixed-size cases like the MTS 993V (15" to 15.5") and MTS 992V (16" to 16.5") give a closer fit, while adjustable cases like the Vector and the Maple Leaf Adjustable (15" to 16.5") work well for growing players.

Shaped or oblong. Shaped cases follow the outline of the viola and are usually lighter and more compact. Oblong cases are larger, with more room for extra bows, a shoulder rest and accessories.

Look at the interior. Suspension interiors, like those in the Maple Leaf Adjustable and Core CC498V, hold the viola at the neck and lower bout so the top and back float clear of the shell.

Think about how you will carry it. Backpack and shoulder straps free your hands on the walk to school or rehearsal.
