Advanced violin buying guide

How to choose an advanced or professional violin

Play it against what you have now. At this level the difference should be obvious under your own bow: a quicker response, more colors at every dynamic, and a sound that carries in a hall rather than just sounding loud under your ear.

Judge the instrument, not the label. Workshop origin, tonewood seasoning and setup tell you more than a name or a date on the label. The bridge, soundpost and strings are fitted to each violin, so they shape its voice as much as the wood does.

Budget for the bow. These violins are sold violin only, and a better bow is often what draws out their full depth and projection. Our wood violin bows are a good place to start.
