First viola buying guide

How to choose a beginner viola

Start with the correct size. Violas are measured by body length in inches rather than fractions, and the right size depends on the player's arm length, not age. Use our sizing guide or ask Atelier to confirm the best fit.

Prioritize setup over the lowest price. Properly fitted pegs, bridge, soundpost and strings make tuning easier and help a new violist draw a full, clear sound from the C string sooner.

Check what the outfit includes. Every Canzona outfit in this collection comes with a graphite composite bow and a lightweight case; add rosin and a shoulder rest and a new player is ready for the first lesson.

Consider renting when the player is growing quickly or still exploring the instrument. Buying can make sense for a committed student who wants a specific model and plans to keep it. Atelier can help compare both paths.
