How to choose viola strings
Match the scale to the viola. A shorter scale fits a smaller viola; full-size violas commonly run from 15 inches to 16½ inches and longer. The size on the set has to match the instrument, not the player’s age.
Choose a core. Steel-core strings such as Prelude and Red Label are durable, stable and bright, and they settle in quickly for lessons and rehearsals. Synthetic-core strings such as Dominant, Zyex and Evah Pirazzi sound warmer and more complex, which is the step most advancing players make. Helicore uses a multi-stranded steel core when you want a clear, quick response without moving to a solo set.
Start with medium tension. Medium suits most violas. Lighter and heavier gauges are for fine-tuning a specific instrument.
Listen to the C. The C string carries the viola’s lower voice. If the bottom is thin, muddy or slow to speak, that is often the string to replace, rather than changing the whole set.
Replace before they go dull. Players practising most days usually change strings every six to twelve months, or sooner if the sound turns dull, they won’t stay in tune, or the winding frays. Change one string at a time so the bridge stays in place.
Returns. Unopened strings can be returned within 45 days of delivery; opened strings can’t be returned, so ask us if you’re unsure which set to buy.
