How to choose violin strings
Match the size to your violin. Full-size (4/4) strings fit adult instruments; younger players need the size that matches their violin, from 1/16 to 3/4.
Choose a core. Steel-core strings like Prelude and Red Label are durable, stable and bright, ideal for beginners. Synthetic-core strings like Dominant, Zyex and Evah Pirazzi sound warmer and more complex, and are the step up most advancing players make. Gut-core strings like Passione and Eudoxa offer the richest, most traditional tone for experienced players.
Start with medium tension. Medium suits most violins; lighter and heavier gauges are for fine-tuning a specific instrument.
Check your E string. Many sets include a choice of E string. If your violin has a fine tuner for the E, choose a ball-end or removable-ball E.
Replace before they go dull. Players practising most days usually change strings every six to twelve months, or sooner if the sound turns dull, they won’t stay in tune, or the winding frays. Change one string at a time so the bridge stays in place.
Returns. Unopened strings can be returned within 45 days of delivery; opened strings can’t be returned, so ask us if you’re unsure which set to buy.
About this collection
Violin Strings
The right violin strings can change the sound, response, and feel of your instrument. Atelier carries violin strings for beginners, school orchestra students, advancing players, and professionals, with options for warmth, brilliance, projection, stability, and quick response.
If your violin sounds dull, feels slow under the bow, or will not stay in tune, a fresh set of strings may make a noticeable difference. Student players often need durable, stable strings that respond easily. Advanced players may prefer strings that offer more color, power, or complexity.
Not sure which set is right for your violin? Ask Atelier for guidance. Our team can help you choose strings based on your instrument, playing level, tonal goals, and teacher recommendations.
