How to choose cello strings
Match the size to the cello. Full-size (4/4) strings fit adult instruments. Younger players need the size that matches the cello, from 1/8 to 3/4. A 4/4 set will not fit a smaller cello.
Choose a core. Steel-core strings such as Prelude and Red Label are durable, stable and bright, and they settle in quickly for lessons. Helicore uses a multi-stranded steel core and is the step-up many school cellists make: clearer and quicker, and still practical. Synthetic-core strings such as Dominant sound warmer and more complex, and are the choice for serious study. Versum is a steel-core set for players who want more power and focus.
Start with medium tension. Medium suits most cellos. Lighter and heavier gauges are for fine-tuning a specific instrument.
The A usually wears first. Change one string at a time so the bridge stays in place. Some players replace only the G and C; Spirocore G & C is in this collection for that, and it is not a full set.
Replace before they go dull. Players practising most days usually change strings every six to twelve months, or sooner if the sound turns dull, they won’t stay in tune, or the winding frays.
Returns. Unopened strings can be returned within 45 days of delivery; opened strings can’t be returned, so ask us if you’re unsure which set to buy.
