A Three-Generation Commitment to Musical Excellence
A Three-Generation Commitment to Musical Excellence

Our Heritage
Some businesses are built. Others are inherited - not by blood, but by devotion.
Atelier for Fine Stringed Instruments was founded in 1994 by master luthier Constantin Popescu, whose trained eye, exacting standards, and lifelong passion for the violin transformed a small shop in southern Fairfield County, Connecticut into one of the most respected fine instrument dealers in the Northeast. For thirty years, teachers, performers, and serious students trusted Constantine and his staff implicitly — and for good reason.
When the opportunity arose in 2024 to carry that legacy forward, we didn't take it lightly.
Forty-Five Years in the Making
Our family's roots in the music industry stretch back to 1979. Music
has never been a business to us — it has been a way of life. Growing up surrounded by instruments, musicians, and the particular kind of community that only forms around a love of sound gave us a perspective that no business school teaches. We understand what it means when a parent walks through the door hoping to find the right instrument for a child just beginning. We understand what a professional musician needs when the stakes are high. And we understand
the irreplaceable value of trust built over decades.
When we acquired Atelier, our first commitment was continuity.
Constantin's master luthiers and department managers — the people who built Atelier's reputation one instrument at a time - remained. The expertise stays. The standards stay. What changes is the energy and resources behind them.

Our Philosophy
"We live in a global economy, and exceptional instruments are being made in far reaches of the globe," Mike explains. "This may not have been the case just a short few years ago, but much of the world has caught up! Why limit ourselves and our customers?"
This perspective, combined with deep relationships with manufacturers worldwide, has expanded our inventory beyond traditional Eastern European sources. We now offer access to exceptional instruments from across the globe while maintaining the old-world craftsmanship and time-intensive artistry that defines great lutherie.
