Electric violas, from silent practice to the stage
A 5-string electric gives violists the low C they rely on plus the violin's E, in one instrument. Practice through headphones, then plug in for the gig. Every electric we sell is set up by our luthiers so it feels and responds like the instrument you already play.

Electric viola buying guide
How to choose an electric viola
Start with the range you need. A 5-string electric covers the viola's C, G, D and A strings and adds the violin's E, so one instrument handles viola parts and higher lines for jazz, rock, fiddle and improvising.
Expect a different feel. A 5-string neck is a little wider than a viola's and the body is shorter, so give yourself a few sessions to adjust your left-hand frame and bow angles.
Plan the rest of your rig. To play out loud you'll need an instrument cable and an amplifier or PA; for quiet practice, headphones through your amp or interface. Add a bow and case if you don't already have them; the Yamaha YEV105 is sold instrument only.
Feel matters as much as sound. Every electric we sell is set up by our luthiers so the strings, bridge and playability feel natural under your hands. If you're unsure it fits your playing, book a private buying consultation and we'll help you decide before you order.
