Is the Caprice a step up from a beginner violin?
Yes. It is designed for students who are progressing quickly. Compared with entry-level violins, it has a flamed curly maple back and sides and a hand-applied spirit varnish, for more warmth, clarity and projection.
Will my child's teacher approve of this violin?
It has what teachers look for in a serious student instrument: fully hand-carved seasoned spruce and maple, an ebony fingerboard, pegs and chinrest, and a Wittner tailpiece with four fine tuners. Our luthiers inspect and adjust every Caprice before it ships.
What size does my child need?
Violin size is chosen by arm length, not age. Our sizing guide shows how to measure at home. The Caprice comes in sizes from 1/8 to full size (4/4). If your child is between sizes, call us at 203.661.9500 before ordering and we'll help you choose.
Should I choose Prelude or Helicore strings?
Prelude strings come standard and give a stable, comfortable feel. Helicore is a recommended upgrade for advancing players who want quicker response and more tonal complexity. You choose the strings in the options above, and we install them during setup.
What happens when they outgrow it?
Moving up a fractional size carries a $65 exchange fee. When it's time for a higher-level violin, our trade-up program can apply up to 100% of your original Atelier purchase price after a luthier evaluation.
Can I return it?
Yes. Instruments are covered by our 45-day return window from delivery, subject to the condition requirements in our returns policy.
