Aubert has made bridges in Mirecourt, France, the historic center of French violin making, since 1864. Founded by Emile Aubert in the 19th century and still a family company, Aubert has handed its bridge-making traditions and know-how down from generation to generation. Its Aubert and De Luxe brands are registered around the world.

Selected Maple, Naturally Seasoned

As wood specialists, Aubert selects quality maple and follows each step of a natural seasoning process that takes several years, a tradition behind every bridge the company makes.

The #5 Étude Grade

The Étude is the starting point of Aubert's range, below the Mirecourt #7, Luxe, and De Luxe grades, which use progressively more selective maple. It brings Aubert's French craftsmanship and traditional pattern to an accessible price, making it a dependable choice for student and school violas. It is also a practical replacement when a bridge has warped, cracked, or been knocked down.

Which Width Do I Need?

Violas vary widely in size and shape, so there is no single bridge width for a given body length. A luthier chooses the width by measuring the viola at the bridge position and checking string spacing, arching, neck angle, and fingerboard shape.

  • 46 mm – Smaller or narrow-pattern violas
  • 48 mm – Common for many standard violas
  • 50 mm – Larger violas with broader arching
  • 52 mm – Wide-pattern or oversized violas

Professional Fitting Required

A bridge blank cannot be installed straight out of the package. The feet must be shaped to the top of the viola, and the height, curve, string spacing, and thickness must be cut to suit the instrument. An unfitted or poorly fitted bridge can hurt tone and playability and may damage the viola.
