Bow buying guide

Questions buyers ask before they choose

Wood or carbon fiber?

Pernambuco and brazilwood bows are prized for warmth, nuance and responsiveness. Carbon fiber bows are durable, stable in changing humidity and consistent, which makes them a popular choice for students, outdoor playing and a reliable second bow.

What size bow do I need?

Match the bow to the size of the instrument: a 3/4 violin uses a 3/4 violin bow, and so on. Violas use viola bows regardless of body length. Our sizing guide covers each instrument.

French or German bass bow?

French bows are held like a cello bow, with the palm over the stick; German bows have a taller frog held from below. Choose the style your teacher uses, or ask us if you're not sure.

Can I return a bow?

Bows may be returned within 45 days of delivery only if they show no signs of use or rosin residue; a bow that has been played is final sale. See our returns policy for details.

Do you rehair bows?

Yes. Our workshop rehairs violin, viola, cello and bass bows. See bow rehairing.
