Every string player knows the feeling — you're playing a note that should sing, and instead it wobbles, swells, or just sounds off. That's a wolf tone, and it's one of the most common acoustic quirks of carved wooden instruments. The good news? It's an easy fix.
A wolf tone eliminator is a small metal tube with a rubber-lined interior that slips onto the offending string behind the bridge. By shifting its position along the string, you can dial in the right spot to tame or completely eliminate the wolf — no tools, no permanent modifications, no fuss.
Wolf tones are especially common on cellos, but violins and violas are not immune, particularly on instruments with a strong, responsive top. If you've noticed an uneven or artificial-sounding sustain on a specific note, this little device is worth trying before anything else.
- Works on violin and viola
- Simple to install and adjust — slides along the string
- Non-invasive: no alterations to your instrument
- A go-to first step recommended by luthiers worldwide
If you're unsure whether a wolf tone is what you're dealing with, our staff is happy to help you troubleshoot in the shop.
