Violin, Viola, Cello & Bass Rentals in Norwalk
Atelier for Fine Stringed Instruments brought its luthier expertise to Norwalk in 2024 — backed by AAA Band Rentals, the school music family that has been delivering instruments to Norwalk students, calling on Norwalk teachers, and advocating for Norwalk school music programs since 1979. Atelier Came to Norwalk in 2024.
But Norwalk Came First.
Atelier for Fine Stringed Instruments arrived at 20 Fitch Street in 2024 — but it didn't arrive alone. It was brought here by AAA Band Rentals, the school music family that has been delivering instruments to Norwalk students since 1979. The owner grew up in Norwalk. He came through Norwalk's school music programs. He knows the teachers, the principals, the Music Department. He's been in these buildings his whole life. When Atelier's luthier expertise met that kind of community trust, something genuinely rare happened: fine instrument care with a hometown soul.
An Experience That Sets the Tone
Most rental companies hand you an inexpensive instrument, or one that hasn't been properly set up to play. Atelier brings four expert in-house luthiers and a vast inventory of high-quality, mostly European-made instruments to a community that AAA Band Rentals has been serving since 1979. That combination — premium instruments, craft-level setup, and four decades of Norwalk school relationships — is something no competitor can replicate.
For Kids & Parents
A real introduction to a real instrument. Our rental inventory is vast and mostly European-made — the kind of quality that responds to a beginner's touch and actually sounds like something. We show your child how to rosinate the bow, care for the instrument, and produce their first clear notes before they leave the shop. Walk-ins are always welcome at 20 Fitch Street.
For Norwalk Teachers
AAA Band Rentals has been calling on Norwalk teachers and the Music Department for over 45 years. That relationship doesn't go away — it gets stronger. We support student-owned and school-owned instruments, facilitate repairs, coordinate deliveries, and show up when something needs to get done. You're not dealing with a call center. You're dealing with someone who sat in your orchestra class.
For Advancing Players
When your child outgrows a beginner rental, the conversation doesn't end — it gets interesting. We carry step-up instruments, fine instruments, and antique instruments that serious Norwalk players come from across Fairfield County to try. Up to two years of rental credit applies toward any purchase in our shop.
Every Norwalk School.
Every Year.
We deliver to all Norwalk Public Schools — free of charge — and work directly with Norwalk's music staff to coordinate instrument delivery, sizing, repairs, and accessories throughout the school year.
Luthiers
Every Instrument Set Up by an Expert.
Not a Technician. A Luthier.
Most rental companies hand you an inexpensive instrument, or one that's not been properly set up to play. We hand you a high-quality, mostly European-made instrument that has been inspected, adjusted, and approved by one of our four expert in-house luthiers — people who have dedicated their professional lives to the art of stringed instruments.
-
Bridge & Nut Fitting
Properly fitted bridges and nut slots dramatically reduce the finger pressure needed to produce a clear tone — making the first weeks of learning significantly less frustrating for young players.
-
String & Sound Post Adjustment
String selection and sound post positioning are calibrated for beginner playability and tonal response — the kind of detail a general music store never addresses.
-
Teacher-Standard Accessories
We stock the specific strings, rosin, and shoulder rests that Norwalk orchestra directors specify — no surprises on the first day of class.
-
Vast Inventory, Mostly European-Made
Our rental inventory is extensive and curated — with a strong emphasis on high-quality European instruments. Students aren't renting an entry-level factory instrument. They're starting on something that a luthier chose, inspected, and stands behind.
AAA Band Rentals has been calling on Norwalk teachers and the Music Department since 1979 — the owner came through Norwalk's own school music programs. Atelier joined that relationship in 2024, adding luthier-level instrument care to a community bond that was already decades deep.

Right Here in Your Community.
AAA Band Rentals has been in Norwalk since 1979. The owner grew up in this city, came through Norwalk's own school music programs, and has spent his career in these schools. Atelier for Fine Stringed Instruments joined 20 Fitch Street in 2024 — bringing world-class luthier care to a community that was already home. This is not a chain opening a branch. It's a family deepening its roots.
Come in for a proper sizing before school starts, drop off an instrument for repair, or pick up accessories your child's teacher asked for. Walk-ins are always welcome. No appointment necessary for exchanges and minor adjustments.
We deliver directly to Norwalk Public Schools throughout the year — so families who prefer it can have instruments and repairs handled right at school.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything Norwalk parents want to know before getting started.
Where can I rent a violin in Norwalk, CT?
You can rent a violin at Atelier for Fine Stringed Instruments, located at 20 Fitch Street in Norwalk, CT. We offer quality student and step-up violins for rent — including fractional sizes for younger beginners — with monthly rates starting at $24/month for fractional sizes and $35/month for full-size instruments.
Every rental includes the option to add Damage & Theft Protection, and all rental payments build toward ownership — with up to two full years of credit applicable to a purchase. Our in-house luthiers are on-site to keep your instrument playing its best throughout your rental.
Whether your child is just starting strings or you're returning to the instrument as an adult, our staff will help you find the right fit. Visit us at 20 Fitch Street, Norwalk, or explore rental options at atelierfinestrings.com.
What's included in a violin rental from Atelier in Norwalk?
Every rental includes the instrument, a properly rosined bow, a hard case, and rosin. More importantly, every instrument is fully set up by one of our four expert in-house luthiers before it leaves the shop — bridge height, nut slots, string action, peg function, all of it. That setup detail is what separates us from companies that ship instruments in boxes. We also include free size exchanges as your child grows, and optional Peace of Mind Protection Plan coverage for accidental damage. Free delivery to all Norwalk Public Schools is included with no extra charge.
Am I locked into a long contract? Can I cancel my rental?
Rentals are pre-paid annually — meaning you pay for the year upfront, which is how you get the best value (fractional sizes pay 10 months and get 2 months free). This is not a punishing long-term contract. If your child's situation changes — they switch instruments, lose interest, or you need to pause — reach out to us directly and we'll work with you. AAA Band Rentals has been serving Norwalk families since 1979. The owner grew up in this city, went to school here, and has been in these buildings his whole career. That's not the kind of operation that plays games with a Norwalk family over a rental return.
Do you deliver to Norwalk schools?
Yes — free of charge to all Norwalk Public Schools. That includes all thirteen elementary schools, all four middle schools (Nathan Hale, Ponus Ridge, Roton, and West Rocks), and both high schools (Brien McMahon and Norwalk High). We also serve All Saints Catholic School. We work directly with Norwalk teachers and the Music Department throughout the year — not just at delivery. If you'd rather come to us, we're at 20 Fitch Street with easy parking and walk-in service Monday through Friday.
What happens if my child's rental instrument gets damaged?
We offer an optional Peace of Mind Protection Plan for accidental damage — things that actually happen, like a bow dropped on a hard floor, a seam that opens, or a crack from an instrument left near a heat vent. Simply bring the instrument into our Norwalk shop at 20 Fitch Street. No deductible, no extra repair charges for covered damage. The plan does not cover lost instruments, intentional damage, or cosmetic alterations. For everyday adjustments — a shifted bridge, a loose tuner, a slipping peg — come in anytime. That's just part of what we do.
What size violin does my child need?
Have your child extend their left arm straight out, palm up. Measure from the base of their neck to the center of their palm. Under 17.5 inches is typically a 1/4; 17.5 to 20 inches is a 1/2; 20 to 22 inches is a 3/4; 22 and above is typically full size. Most Norwalk students starting strings in 3rd grade land in the 1/2 or 3/4 range. We have an instrument sizing tool on our website if you want to figure this out before coming in. If you can make it to 20 Fitch Street, we'll size your child properly in person — and free size exchanges are included with every rental if the fit changes.
How much does it cost to rent a violin or cello in Norwalk, CT?
Violin rentals start at $24/month for fractional sizes and $35/month for full size. Cello rentals start at $40/month fractional and $55/month full. Viola rentals range from $30 to $45/month depending on size. Double bass rentals are $60 to $75/month. All rentals are pre-paid annually. Fractional sizes pay for 10 months and get 2 months free. Free delivery to all Norwalk schools is included, as is luthier setup and free size exchanges. Optional Peace of Mind protection plan available at checkout.
When should my child stop renting and buy an instrument?
The right time to buy is when your child is clearly committed and their rental is starting to limit them musically. A student who has been playing seriously for two or three years will start to outgrow what a standard rental can do for them tonally and technically. That's the moment to step up. At Atelier, up to two years of rental credit applies toward any instrument in our shop — from quality student step-ups to fine and antique instruments that serious players come from across Fairfield County to try. Come in when you're ready. That's a conversation we enjoy having.
Do I need to come into the store to rent?
No — you can rent entirely online. Browse instruments, select your size, and check out at atelierfinestrings.com/pages/rentals-1. If your child's teacher has already assigned a size, just go with that. If not, our free instrument sizing tool makes it easy to find the right fit at home. Every rental includes free delivery to your Norwalk school, set up and ready to play. If you ever want to come in, our shop at 20 Fitch Street is always open — but it's entirely your call.
Atelier's Craft.
Norwalk's Family.
Atelier serves Norwalk families from our shop at 20 Fitch Street with professionally prepared violin, viola, cello, and bass rentals. Students can begin with an instrument that has been checked for proper setup, easy playability, and school-ready reliability before it ever leaves the store.
Our Norwalk rental program is designed for parents who want a simple process and real support. We help with sizing, explain the rental terms clearly, offer free size exchanges for growing students, and provide local help if a bridge falls, a peg slips, or a string breaks.
For families in Norwalk, Rowayton, Cranbury, Silvermine, and nearby communities, Atelier combines the convenience of a local rental program with the care of a dedicated string shop. Start online, then let our team prepare an instrument your child can feel proud to play.
