FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: Can I visit the same day to rent an instrument?
A: Yes! Visit our Norwalk location Monday through Friday during business hours. We'll get you set up with a quality rental instrument the same day (subject to availability).

Q: Do you accept trade-ins?
A: Absolutely. We accept trade-ins on student and intermediate instruments toward the purchase of step-up and professional models. Bring your current instrument in for an evaluation.

Q: Can you repair professional and antique instruments?
A: Yes. Our luthiers have extensive experience working on fine Italian, French, and German instruments, as well as contemporary master-crafted violins, violas, cellos, and basses.

Q: Do you work with Norwalk schools?
A: Yes! We're proud to work with Norwalk Public Schools' music programs and have supported local music education for decades. Many orchestra directors throughout the district recommend our rental program to families.

Q: How do I reserve a rental instrument online?
A: Visit www.atelierfinestrings.com and complete the rental reservation form, or call us directly at (475) 317-1275

Q. Do my rental payments apply toward the purchase of a violin, viola, cello, or bass?

A. Yes. At Atelier, every monthly rental payment contributes to the credit toward the purchase of an instrument. This credit can be used toward any instrument in our shop, not just the one you rented.

Q. How many months of rental credit can I use toward a purchase?

A. We offer a maximum of 24 months of rental credit for violin, viola, cello, and bass rentals. Even if you rent longer than 24 months, the maximum credit applied to a purchase is capped at 24 months.

Q. Can I use the full 24 months of credit on any instrument, including upgraded or European-made models?

A. Yes. Your rental credit may be applied to any qualifying Atelier instrument, including step-up, advanced, and professional European-made models.

Q. Does my rental credit expire?

A. Your credit remains valid as long as the rental is active. If the rental contract is terminated or the instrument is returned, the accumulated credit remains on your account but cannot exceed the 24-month maximum.

Q. Can I combine rental credit from multiple children or multiple instruments?

A. Rental credit is applied per student/instrument and cannot be combined across accounts. This ensures accurate tracking and fairness for all clients.

Q. Do I get more rental credit if I rent a more expensive instrument?

A. Yes. Your monthly rental amount (including the instrument category) determines the credit you accrue. Higher rental tiers receive higher monthly credit, but all credits still cap at 24 months maximum.

Q. Can I use my credit across both Atelier locations?

A. Absolutely. Rental credit is honored at both:
   Cos Cob: 403 East Putnam Ave • (203) 661-9500
   Norwalk: 20 Fitch Street • (475) 317-1275

Q. Can I use my credit on consignment instruments?

A. Rental credit may be used toward most instruments in the shop; however, consignment instruments are excluded. If you’re interested in a specific consignment piece, we’ll be happy to discuss options.

Q. Is it okay for a beginner to start on a cheap or online violin? A. This is where parents often get surprised. Many low-priced, mass-produced instruments (often under $200–$300) are not actually playable without significant additional work — and some can’t be made playable at all. Issues we commonly see include: Bridges that are warped or cut to the wrong height Soundposts that are missing, loose, or placed incorrectly Pegs that constantly slip or jam Fingerboards that are uneven or improperly shaped Strings that are extremely low quality Wood that is too soft or poorly dried, leading to cracks or buzzing Bows that cannot tighten or hold rosin Tailpieces and chinrests that break under normal use For a beginner, these issues can make it nearly impossible to produce a clear sound — leading them to think they are the problem, when the issue is the instrument. This is why many teachers strongly discourage “VSO” (poor-quality) Violin Shaped Objects!
