Atelier for Fine Stringed Instruments represents the convergence of two distinguished legacies in Connecticut's music community.

Our Heritage

Founded in 1994 by master luthier Constantine Popescu, Atelier earned its reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and discerning instrument selection. In 2024, we welcomed new ownership that brings over 40 years of experience in the music products industry—but our story actually began much earlier.

Our family's journey in music retail started in 1979 when Mike's father founded Norwalk Music Studios. Mike himself grew up in the business, beginning as a professional drummer before establishing AAA Band Rentals in 2003 with a singular focus: supporting school music programs throughout Connecticut and Westchester County. Through our innovative 50/50 Cooperative Program, we've donated tens of thousands of dollars directly back to school music departments—a testament to our belief that music education builds stronger communities.

When the opportunity arose to acquire Atelier and preserve Constantine Popescu's legacy, it was a natural evolution. We retained the entire staff of master luthiers and department managers, ensuring continuity for the teachers and musicians who have trusted Atelier for three decades.

Our Philosophy

"We live in a global economy, and exceptional instruments are being made in far reaches of the globe," Mike explains. "This may not have been the case just a short few years ago, but much of the world has caught up! Why limit ourselves and our customers?"

This perspective, combined with deep relationships with manufacturers worldwide, has expanded our inventory beyond traditional Eastern European sources. We now offer access to exceptional instruments from across the globe while maintaining the old-world craftsmanship and time-intensive artistry that defines great lutherie.
