*And what we’ve learned about families who practice together*
At Atelier for Fine Strings, we have a tradition that might seem unusual for a business. Every summer, we give all our fractional string players completely free rentals for the entire break. No fees, no hidden costs, no strings attached (pun intended).
Why would we do this? After years of working with young musicians and their families, we’ve discovered something that goes far beyond business sense—we’ve witnessed the transformative power of family music-making.
What We’ve Observed Over the Years
In our decades of serving the community, we’ve noticed a clear pattern. The students who return in the fall with renewed enthusiasm, improved technique, and deeper love for their instrument almost always come from families who found ways to engage with music together during the summer months.
It’s not about having musical parents—some of our most successful student families include parents who couldn’t read a note of music when their child started lessons. Instead, it’s about something much simpler and more powerful: curiosity and connection.

The Parent Who Picked Up the Violin
I remember Stephen, a busy attorney, whose 8-year-old son, Emerson, was struggling with motivation in his violin lessons. That summer, during one of Emerson's practice sessions, Stephen impulsively picked up the tiny violin.
“Show me how to hold this thing,” he said to Emerson.
What followed was twenty minutes of giggles, squeaks, and Emerson patiently correcting his father’s bow hold. For the first time, Emerson was the teacher, and Dad was the student; the violin became a bridge between them, rather than a source of afternoon struggle.
Emerson returned that fall not just as a more confident player, but as someone who saw his instrument as a source of joy and connection. Stephen still can’t play “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” without stopping, but he doesn’t need to—he gave his son something far more valuable.
The Science Behind the Magic
Research consistently shows that children whose parents engage with their learning process—in any subject—show greater persistence, enjoyment, and achievement. Music is no different, but it offers unique opportunities for connection that other activities might not.
When you attempt to play your child’s instrument, several things happen:
- You experience firsthand the challenges they face
- You model that learning is lifelong and mistakes are part of growth
- You create shared experiences and inside jokes
- You demonstrate that their musical journey matters to you
Small Steps, Big Impact
The beauty of musical family connection is that it doesn’t require grand gestures or significant musical knowledge. Some of the most meaningful moments we’ve heard about from families include:
The listening partnership: Parents who sit beside their child during practice, not to critique, but to be present and celebrate small victories.
The duet attempt: Even if it’s just clapping along to their practice piece or humming the melody while they play.
The curious questions: “What’s that technique called?” “Can you teach me that song?” “What’s your favorite part to play?”
The performance audience: Creating mini-concerts in the living room where the child can share what they’ve learned.
Why We Invest in Summer Practice
Our free summer rental program exists because we believe in the long-term value of musical education, not just the technical skills, but the confidence, discipline, and joy that music brings to young lives. We’ve seen too many talented students walk away from music not because they lacked ability, but because they lacked a connection to the experience.
Summer offers families something the school year often doesn’t: time. Time to explore without pressure. Time to play together without rushing to homework or bedtime. Time to discover that music isn’t just something that happens in lessons—it’s something that can happen anywhere, anytime, between any two people willing to try.
Making the Most of Your Free Summer
If your child has a fractional instrument with us this summer, we encourage you to see this as an opportunity for the whole family. You don’t need to become a musician—you just need to become a musical companion.
Try picking up the instrument, even if it feels awkward. Ask your child to teach you something simple. Celebrate the squeaky notes and crooked bow holds. Most importantly, let your child see that music is something worth exploring together.
Some of our most dedicated students come from families who discovered that making music isn’t just about the music—it’s about the connections we create, the confidence we build, and the joy we share.
An Investment in Musical Futures
Our free summer program is ultimately an investment, not just in individual students, but in the future of music education. Every child who returns in the fall with renewed enthusiasm becomes an ambassador for the transformative power of music. Every family that discovers the joy of musical connection becomes part of a community that values arts education.
We’ve learned that when families make music together, everyone wins: students develop deeper connections to their instruments, parents gain new appreciation for the musical journey, and our entire community grows stronger.
This summer, while your young musician has unlimited practice time with us, consider joining them on their musical journey. You might just discover that the magic of music isn’t just in the notes—it’s in the moments we create together.
